| WORLD WITHOUT OIL is a serious game for the public good. WWO invited people from all walks of life to contribute “collective imagination” to confront a real-world issue: the risk our unbridled thirst for oil poses to our economy, climate and quality of life. It’s a milestone in the quest to use games as democratic, collaborative platforms for exploring possible futures and sparking future-changing action. WWO set the model for using a hot net-native storytelling method (‘alternate reality’) to meet civic and educational goals. Best of all, it was compellingly fun. “6 Billion Others” tries to draw a portrait of contemporary mankind by asking questions about universal values. What is Happiness? Electronic Classroom... Awesome Stories. has been a great source of information, particularly about history, for students since it began in 1999. It has thousands of very accessible stories about countless subjects. It’s also just started to provide audio narration to its content. BBC: History section offers an impressive array of exhibitions, activities, games, photo galleries and other resources. Major categories include: Ancient History, Archaeology, Church and State, Science and Discovery, Society and Conflict, War and Culture, and Family History. There are also sections entitled Multimedia Room, Historic Figures, Timelines, Programmes, Reading Room, Talk History, For Kids, and History Trails. Consumer Consequences. is a pretty sophisticated interactive designed for users to determine their ecological “footprint” and to help them reflect what they could do to reduce it. Distributive Justice Interactive Web Site... consists of two parts: an Internet game in which participants in the project freely distribute material and nonmaterial goods building a "society" that undergoes dynamical changes; several types of societies emerge as result of the distribution game ;(2) the part of the project in the exhibition space, a "working space" installation ... And there are always different versions, different stories, about the same events. This is a great website for encouraging the development of visual and cultural literacies in students. iCUE...free, collaborative learning community for students ages 13 and up that incorporates gaming, discussion, and video resources in a safe, online environment created by NBC Learn Kiva...lets you easily make small loans to deserving entrepreneurs worldwide. You browse by projects, borrower journals, pictures, loan history, and so on. You might choose to finance a boutique in Kenya ($200), help an Ecuadorian shopkeeper diversify into toys ($600), or launch a firewood business in Uganda ($350). You can lend as much or as little of the total as you like, and Kiva takes care of tracking the loan and getting your money back. It'll amaze you just how far your money can go. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from the business you've sponsored. This might make an interesting class project! MetaCarta provides all of the current news stories that a Social Studies/ Current Events teacher needs along with a geographic context for each story. You could use the idea of MetaCarta to have your students create their own mashup of news stories that they read in class. Photojournalism: A Record of War - Photography has been used to record war since the Crimean War in 1855. This unit will explore how and why war has been photographed and will also give students an opportunity to see the bias within the recording/reporting of war. Playing History is a collection of more than 100 games related to topics in US and World History as well as civics and geography. The games come from a variety of sources across the web.
